Originally, I wanted Octopus to be raku.
I was going to put the green-bronze on the eyes, and white crackle over the rest of him, and he’d have been AWESOME.
But since I fear that Octopus’ awesome tentacles would not survive the raku process, and since I was uninspired by the available glazes (and I’m not entirely sure how to get high-fire glazes to do what I want, or if it’s even possible), I’m putting underglazes on for the low-fire kiln. There will have to be another raku octopus later.
This is a light beige with a tan-type sponged over top. These glazes are supposed to be translucent in single layers.
Two sponged-coats of tan, and brown on the eyes. I think I like the previous patterning better, so I’ll probably sponge some beige back on top of his head.
I know, octopus eyes don’t look like that at all. I don’t know yet if I want to overpaint them to make a pupil, or leave them as-is. Without pupils he does look more cthuloid, though. It’s like an endless pit of darkness just screaming to swallow your soul.
Next up: Spots. I have dark brown, blue, and a red to go.
I have no idea how this will turn out. If he ends up ugly instead of awesome, I’ll just make another one.
