csa: SPUTNIK!
Last week’s) loot was pretty standard; green beans, squash, kale, green onions, corn, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage. And this thing . . .
It’s a SPUTNIK!
No, actually, it’s a kohlrabi. Which is, apparently, in the cabbage family along with the broccolis and kales and cabbages and cauliflowers and other stuffs. It only looks like some sort of alien pod. Raw, it tastes kind of like a broccoli stem.
I made a salad out of it:
Adapted from Straight From the Farm:
1 small kohlrabi, peeled and thinly sliced
1 medium carrot, peeled and thinly sliced
1 T peanut butter
1 T rice vinegar
1/2 t lemon juice
1/4 t ground black pepper
1/4 t kosher salt
1/4 t sesame oil
Mix everything except kohlrabi and carrot in a bowl and whisk until incorporated. May or may not be smooth, depending on your peanut butter. Add kohlrabi and carrot to bowl, mix together, stick in fridge for an hour or two. Eat.
I could have chopped up some green onions and added them as well, but I didn’t think of it. It could also have a tiny bit of garlic or ginger in it, or replace the lemon juice with soy sauce or tamari.

I love kohlrabi. My mom used to give it to us raw when I was a kid. I can only ever find it at the farmer’s market.

No kohlrabi this week, which is kind of disappointing. I was looking forward to getting another one!
